Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area

  • Recreational opportunities including walking, birdwatching, nature journaling and special events
  • Hands-on learning materials and outreach opportunities for school aged students
  • Adult educational opportunities through the Master Naturalist Program
  • Service learning and internship opportunities connecting the Rio grande to the surrounding landscape
  • Events, programs and workshops happening year round for all ages

VSWCD Education Program

  • Current mil levy has allowed the District to hire a full-time Education Manager

Financial Assistance Program

 

East Valencia Urban Gardens Program

  • Implementation of two community gardens on the East Mesa, producing over 2,500 lbs of produce each year, demonstrating sustainable farming methods.
  • Implementation of a Youth Farming Internship Program - currently serving 15 interns.
  • Free classes and workshops on growing food in an arid, hot climate while conserving water and soil resources.
  • Hands-on learning opportunities for kids groups.
  • Outreach to hundreds of community members on how to start a garden and adopt conservation methods.

 

 

 

 

Future Mil Levy Projects with Increase to 1 Mil Levy will include but not limited to:

 

  • Scholarships, internships and cost-share programs for youth and college students 
  • Small business support for farmers and ranchers 
  • Enhanced school and community environmental education programs available for students, teachers and local community residents
  • School and community education programs on growing food and starting food gardens at home
  • Further land restoration to increase public access for walking trails, horseback riding, hiking and fishing 
  • Natural resource management programs and projects on forest health, rangeland restoration, hazardous fuels reduction, wetlands protection, weed management, soil erosion and much more 
  • New building construction to enhance visitor experience 
  • Eco friendly solar shade structure for visitors 
  • Financial support to collaborate efforts to promote open and green space protection
