Vote November 5th 2019!

Thank you to all who came out to vote for conservation during the local election on November 5th 2019.  The Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District Board of Supervisors cares very much about our communities and natural resources in Valencia County and the rest of our District service area.  Moving forward, we will be working to increase our outreach in demonstrating the importance of these efforts.   We invite all community members to come to Whitfield to get to know us and what we do.

Our area has a rich history of small farm agriculture and making a livelihood from the land. The District supports our local farmers and ranchers who are ready to restore our severely degraded soils, and protect our water resources as mandated by the Soil & Water Conservation District Act, which was born out of the Dust Bowl Era.

The District works in partnership with private landowners and local, state, not for profit and federal agencies to address increasingly severe fire and storm events that are creating erosion problems that affect all residents.  This is a tremendous funding challenge; however we are committed to protecting this beautiful valley, supporting and training young and new producers, outdoor enthusiasts, providing quality environmental education to our youth at the Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area, and working for all of our residents who deserve the good health and quality of life that restored lands and protected waters can bring.

Abel Camarena, Chair

Board of Supervisors, staff of Valencia Soil & Water Conservation District

Estimate what a 1 mil VSWCD levy will cost

Formula: Our annual mil levy will be calculated by using the statewide rate of one-third of the appraised value multiplied by one mil (.001).

Example 1: One acre of land with mobile home (mobile home is not included in the appraised value) $7,350.00 X .33 X .001= $2.42 per year

Example 2: 2.5 acres with 1800 sq. ft. home $89,000 X .33 X .001 = $29.37 per year

Example 3: 25 acre ranch with improvements. $518,391 X .33 X .001 = $171.07 per year

Ballot Question:

"Shall the Valencia Soil & Water Conservation District (VSWCD) impose an assessment of $1.00 per $1000.00 of net taxable value of property pursuant to Soil and Water Conservation District Act Sections 73-20-25 to 73-20-48 NMSA 1978 for the following purposes: Addressing district administrative and operational needs; growing financial and technical programs for local farms and community gardens; implementing habitat restoration in the Whitfield Wildlife Complex Area; expanding Whitfield education programs for schools and in our communities; protecting pollinators and providing foraging areas; addressing soil erosion, floodwater and sediment damage; testing water quality; and reducing wildfire threats to communities?”
