In recognition of the many benefits of learning and exploring outside, New Mexico has designated September 27 - October 1 as a week of celebrating outdoor learning.
Valencia Soil and Water Conservation District, in partnership with Ciudad Soil and Water Conservation District and the Bosque Ecosystem Monitoring Program, is excited to offer two new opportunities -- a classroom activity for K-6 students and an outdoor event at Whitfield Wildlife Conservation Area -- to facilitate outdoor learning during this week and beyond.
Water Walk School Outdoor Learning Activity
Available for classes in Los Lunas and Belen School Districts
VSWCD, CSWCD, and BEMP have created an easy-to-implement, water-focused outdoor learning activity that can be used in any K-6 (and beyond!) classroom. Depending on student ability, the activity includes observing how water moves through the environments outside students' classrooms, thinking creatively from the perspective of a raindrop, and collecting data about litter and pollution in nearby waterways. The activity is available for download as a PDF below.
The Friends of Whitfield will recognize the cIass or grade level which shows exceptional enthusiasm for outdoor learning in completing this activity. The winning group will be acknowledged at the Friends' Annual Meeting on December 4, 2021.
Ideally, students will complete this activity during Outdoor Learning Week. Valencia SWCD will then follow up with teachers during early October to observe the litter and pollution data collected by students, and to choose the winner to be recognized by the Friends of Whitfield.
